As an ethical vegetarian, I am heartened to share that Adidas has officially ended its use of kangaroo leather in all products—a significant victory for animal welfare and conscious consumers worldwide.

In May 2025, Adidas confirmed it had ceased sourcing kangaroo skins in 2024 and will complete the phase-out of existing products containing the material by the end of this year . This decision follows sustained pressure from animal advocacy groups, including the Center for a Humane Economy and Animal Wellness Action, which have long highlighted the cruelty inherent in the kangaroo leather industry.

Kangaroo leather, or “k-leather,” has been prized for its lightweight and durable qualities, particularly in high-end soccer cleats. However, the procurement of this material involves the commercial hunting of wild kangaroos in Australia, a practice that results in the deaths of millions of animals annually. This includes mother kangaroos and their joeys, many of whom are orphaned and subsequently killed or left to die .

Adidas' move aligns with similar decisions by other major athletic brands such as Nike, Puma, Diadora, and New Balance, all of which have discontinued the use of kangaroo leather in recent years. This collective shift reflects a growing industry-wide commitment to ethical sourcing and animal welfare.

While Adidas has not specified the exact materials that will replace kangaroo leather, the company is reportedly increasing its use of recycled synthetic materials and exploring bio-based alternatives . As consumers, it is crucial to remain vigilant and advocate for transparency to ensure that these alternatives do not perpetuate other forms of environmental or animal harm.

This development represents a meaningful step toward more humane and sustainable practices in the fashion and sportswear industries. It underscores the impact that informed consumer choices and persistent advocacy can have in driving corporate responsibility and ethical change.

As we celebrate this progress, let us continue to support and demand innovations that prioritize the well-being of all living beings.
